Miami Carol City High School signs with NIKE and BSN Sports

Ironic how 9 years later, the first Dade county high school to appear in a NIKE commercial has officially signed a contract with the worlds leading brand. I don’t know the details of the agreement but they also partnered up with BSN Sports. For those who are not familiar with BSN, it is a factory-direct equipment company. BSN represents hundreds of teams/organizations across america. Being a Chief alumnus I feel this was long over due. I remember when the commercial first aired. Me and the boys believed we was about to receive some fly Nike uniforms and gear. Sad to say Coach Walt Frazier, declined the offer. The only thing we were given was the generic “Miami Carol City Football is Everything,” which I still have. All Nike schools had these shirts, lol. I am proud to say that this shows my school is moving back in the right direction.

Since Aubrey Hill has token over as the head coach, the team has done nothing but progressed. The talent is starting to come back to its home. With Rashad Fenton signing to the University of South Carolina, shows the program is gaining national exposure. Its going to take more than a apparel deal to prove we have returned. That comes with wins and competing for state championships.

Best Point Guard in the NBA?

Russell Westbrook is making his case as the best point guard in the league. He’s had to carry his team with Kevin Durant in & out of the lineup and he has been very productive doing so. People are wondering whether Westbrook might be more valuable to his team than Durant. There are also questions if he could possibly have more success if he was the leading man on his own squad. Just take a look at his numbers from this month alone & you can see why Westbrook’s name has been gaining momentum around the league…he’s been averaging about 30 points, 10 assists & 8 rebounds and has been putting up monster stats with Durant out of the lineup. The most explosive playmaker in the NBA, he’s also been more efficient, posting those numbers while only playing under 30 minutes on some nights. I’m calling it now that Westbrook will win an MVP trophy in the next few seasons.

Other names that are brought up in the best point guard conversation are Chris Paul, Stephen Curry, Kyrie Irving & John Wall. Paul has been considered the best point guard because he is the prototypical guard with a pass-first, shoot-second mentality. He puts up high assist numbers and gets his teammates involved in the game, while being one of the most efficient players in the league. The only knock against Paul is that he hasn’t gotten deep into the playoffs. His teams have been disappointing in the playoffs, coming in with high expectations but consistently getting knocked out in the first & second rounds. He has cost the Clippers late in games with dumb mistakes & turnovers and he should be more aggressive in scoring as I feel he could score more than 20 a night if he really wanted to. Steph Curry, the best 3-point shooter in the game today, probably has taken the best PG title from Paul this season. He’s elevated his game and improved on much criticized areas such as defense & passing. Curry is the most exciting player in the NBA to watch and is deadly from anywhere on the court. From pulling up for the 3 to swerving through traffic down the lane with his fancy ball handling, he can get any shot he wants and hit it with pinpoint accuracy. John Wall is one of the best finishers in the league and is having a career season. He leads the NBA in assists with over 10 a game and he’s been the key piece to the Wizards getting back into the playoffs. Kyrie Irving is another point guard with a shoot first mentality. He’s not much of a facilitator, isn’t impressive on defense but is a lethal scorer and probably has the best handles out of anybody. With LeBron James & a better supporting cast, he has the potential to be a more all-around guard in the next couple years.

The talent at the point guard position is probably the deepest it has ever been. In addition to the first five, you also have Damian Lillard, Rajon Rondo, Derrick Rose, Kyle Lowry, Mike Conley, Goran Dragic, Tony Parker, Kemba Walker, Brandon Knight, & Eric Bledsoe. In my opinion, Lillard has the potential to be the biggest star out of all those I just named. He’s still young (3^rd year in the league) and is far from reaching his prime. If this was a list of the top 5 offensive point guards, he would definitely be in there without a question. He’s one of the most clutch players in the NBA, hitting big shots for the Trailblazers late in games. The man hit one of the best buzzer-beaters I’ve ever seen when he sent Houston home last year in the 1^st round of the playoffs. This season, he’s averaging over 21 points, 6 assists & 4 rebounds a game.

The way Stephen Curry & Russell Westbrook are playing, they’ll be considered for the MVP trophy at the end of the season. Steph most likely is going down as the best 3 point shooter ever along with Ray Allen & Reggie Miller. It seems like Westbrook has gotten even better & more explosive since his torn meniscus injury in the 2013 playoffs and arthroscopic surgery last year. I feel like Westbrook is the player Derrick Rose was supposed to be before his knee injuries. With Steph & Westbrook in my top 2, the rest of my top 5 in no order would be Paul, Kyrie & Wall with Dame not too far behind them at 6th.

Hallandale Chargers: Recipe of Success

Since I graduated from high school in 2009 the sports scene has change drastically. The classifications was expanded to 8 classes instead of 6. The outlets on which these student-athetes have to showcase their talent has also grown. Back in my time you only had camps to show off your skills. The football is starting to resemble the times when I played. Its competitive and theirs not one good team. Anybody can win state, LITERALLY ANYBODY! Hallandale Chargers are real contenders in the class 6a.

If the Chargers were to lose this weekend to a stack Central team they would have already accomplished a lot. They are the first team in school history to go undefeated throughout the regular season. Other teams have came close but none as good as this batch of talented chargers. If your not familiar with Hallandale football programs, UF great Frankie Hammond Jr. and now Kansas City Chief was a dual-sport athlete there. Speaking of the Hammond family, his little Joshua Hammond (#5)  is one of the talented juniors who contributed a lot to their success. Their receiving core includes Neru N’Shaka (#8) who has made big catches throughout the year. Neru known for his big plays at receiver he has also seen time at quarterback. Both of these players with a long list of others are already getting offers from bit time universities. The team beat district rival Boyton Beach Tigers in a nail-biter of a game. To win with great talent you have to have great coaches to get them to the next level. 

Coach Dameon Jones and his staff is doing a good job with the kids from the Hallandale community. Since 2007 when Jones took over the team, he has put at least 40 kids into college to play football. Players went to all levels of collegiate football from JUCO to D1. As they head into this tough match-up this week, I know the Chargers will be prepared for the task at hand. With the young talent and leadership the Chargers have even with a lost this weekend they have a good chance of going further next year. 

The Best High School Football Teams in South Florida of All-TIme

 When it comes to high school football it has reached the highest it has ever been in its long history. High school teams and players are getting exposure from social media to shows on ESPNU. Nike and Under Armor has been a leading force in generating exposure for the talented youth by holding football camps as a platform. Florida arguably has the best athletes. Many scouts come to the tri-county to recruit for all positions.  The West (Miami Northwestern), Carol City, St. Thomas, Central, Booker T and American Heritage has produced talent at big universities and in the NFL. 

The discussion of the best high school team of all-time from the South Florida area could be heard in all circles and walks of life. The best teams always vary by generation and what type of football you like. I’m going to try not to be bias, facts are going to outweigh feelings. Here is my top 5 no specific order:

Miami Northwestern Bulls (Class of 2007 & 2008)

-This team was arguably the best in the schools history. With top prospects like Jacorey Harris and Sean Spence on both sides of the ball the Bulls were unstoppable. Averaging 50 points a game and shutting out most opponents was the formula for success. Many prospects went to D-1 universities and some found a place in the NFL. The legacy was cemented with 2 state championships.

Miami Carol City Chiefs (Class of 2003)

-Coach Frazier believed in great defense and a strong running game. Even though it was the death of his legacy, his 2003 state team was the epitome of his vision. With a host of running backs starring Chris Strothers, Carol City ran the ball down opponents throats that year. The most feared player on the team had to be Willie Williams, who broke the arm of Edgewater quarterback on the first play of the state game. Kenny Phillips 2-time NFL super bowl champion started at safety as a junior on this team.

Miami Central (Class of 2011)

-This was the year that the Roc Boys on 95th street was loaded with D-1 talent. The team was lead by the running attack of Devonta Freeman and the arm of Rakeem Cato. Unable to deliver a state championship in the previous year, the talent of the Rockets blew out a talented Dr.Phillips. Notable players on the team was Charles Gaines Jr, Thomas Finnie, Tommy Shula, Durell Eskridge and Joseph Yearby. 

Booker T Washington (Class of 2014)

-This class of football was the best team in dade county two years in a row, winning two state championships and putting a number of property stricken youth in universities across the nation. Lead by Chad Thomas on defensive and Treon Harris on offensive teams had to face the best of both worlds each week. Majority of the team was the reason the track team was able to win a state championship during that era. 

St.Thomas (Class of 2009)

-The only team in my top five that doesn’t have a championship title but has enough talent to go head to head with other teams on the list. The 2008-2009 St. Thomas Aquinas was loaded with talented players. Lamarcus Joyner and Giovanni Benard are probably the biggest names off of this team. Phillip Dorsett and Rashad Greene now at rival schools also played on this team. You will see a significant amount of these players playing on sunday.

America is Changing, the NFL should too

The same day “Athlete Talk” debuted, two Pittsburgh Steelers running backs were cited for a misdemeanor marijuana possession. The NFL is more than likely to issue out suspensions but for now the situation is under investigation. I first, want to express my opinion on how dumb it is to drive around in a car with 20 grams of Weed (Stephen A. Voice). This is a prime example to show that marijuana is affecting the NFL culture everyday. On the other hand, this allows me to introduce a new perspective. The NFL should adapt to the times as America has and become more “understandable” when it comes to marijuana use. 

Opening up to using medical reasons should be the 1st step the NFL should take when tackling the marijuana issues in the locker room. The NFL has two law suits there’re currently dealing with: concussions and painkillers. Marijuana has showed to help with concussion-like symptoms without the side effects of the painkillers that the NFL has pushed on players throughout decades.

In a Huffington Post article by Eddie Pellis, retired defensive lineman Marvin Washington states that players don’t smoke because its something to do. Washington reveals its more of an “What if you could take something that helps you heal faster from a concussion, that prevents your equilibrium from being off for two weeks and your eyesight for being off for four weeks?” 

Did you know that 6 players who have tested positive for marijuana use have been suspended longer then Ray Rice (Domestic Violence)? After doing research I discovered that Josh Gordon  (2014 season), Daryl Washington (2014 season), Von Miller (4 games in 2013), Walter Thurmond (4 games in 2013 season), Brandon Browner (2013 season and 4 games in 2014 season) and Will Hill (6 games in 2014 season) have been suspended more harshly then Rice. Rice will only have to serve a 2 game suspension after knocking his then fiancé unconscious and dragging her out an Atlantic City hotel elevator. 

The penalties are to severe when you consider that marijuana legality is expanding and it has a potential use as relief for chronic pain. We see this in everyday life when a drug dealer is convicted for 20 plus years, but people who commit violent-crimes are in prison for minimum years. The conservativeness of the NFL will not allow marijuana to get a past just yet but they are allowing this harmless drug to ruin young men careers and franchise seasons. 

Being High or Losing your Dream: You Decide

At the start of the 2013 NFL season, no one would believe that a player who is suspended for the first two games would lead the league in receiving yards. Cleveland Browns Josh Gordon accomplished the near impossible feat. As we enter the 2014 season, Gordon is facing a possible indefinite suspension or he will be suspended for some significant time. His biggest obstacle since his days at Baylor University hasn’t been the talented defenders he faced on Saturday and Sundays; but the most controversial drug of our generation, Marijuana! 

While growing up in the rough neighborhood of Carol City and being involved in sports year-round, I faced the peer pressure to indulge in marijuana usage. Even though at that time I didn’t give in to peer pressure, I’m not totally against marijuana use. I believe that if it starts to harm the way you provide for your family then there is one thing to do, QUIT! This has become a reoccurring issue with professional football players. For example, Justin Blackmon has recently been charged with marijuana possession. He is already serving an indefinite suspension from the NFL for substance abuse violations. The key is to stop this issue in college and show student-athletes what can be taken away by satisfying an urge. 

I commend Tyrann “Honey Badger" Matthieu on how he handled the situation he went through entering his junior season at LSU. After coming off a Heisman finalist sophomore season, the "Honey Badger" was dismissed from the team for a failed drug test then arrested for marijuana possession. Which lead to him missing a whole football season. Although he went through an all time low, he was still able to get drafted by the Arizona Cardinals. He had to hit rock bottom to realize the importance of following the rules even if you do not agree with them.
